NOTE: Peter was the technical consultant on this film.

Oilpro was recently invited to privately screen a new documentary on the US shale revolution, Breaking Free. Scheduled for release this fall, the film tells the story of the US unconventional revolution through the voices of a broad array of academic experts and industry officials. The film also fairly engages the prevailing criticisms levied at fracing, including alleged water contamination and induced seismic activity. In a time when the medium of film is largely used by fracing opponents, this piece is a refreshing presentation of the other side of the story. Importantly, while the film's creator is an advocate for fracing, the film does not come across as overt pro-industry propaganda. Instead, Breaking Free presents a balanced view of the facts of fracing, even giving airtime to skeptics of the process. We commend the producers for the fairness and openness of the film. In this post, Oilpro Columnist Jeff Reed presents a discussion of the issues, a review of the film following our private viewing, and a trailer.

It's been one week since the end of this year's Wall Street Green Summit XIII which was held in New York City at the Columbia Club. I guess it takes some time for attendees and reporters to let all the new ideas sink in, but we have seen two stellar articles the past two days on the Summit.

While the US natural gas resource base continues to grow exponentially, the problem continues to be what to do with all that gas year round. Unfortunately, the utility market is mainly a winter and summer seasonal peak period. That leaves the spring and fall as the "shoulder" period with less demand.

Peter Fusaro, educator, consultant, author, urges our dealing wisely with irresponsible current fossil fuel production and useage to minimize further harm to our environment, like global warming. He worked for years on proposed legislation for cap and trade of carbon emissions, only to see our legislators corruptly fail to vote it into law.

Sometimes a great idea requires great timing to ignite public recognition and action. Energy efficiency has long been a great idea; however, not until the recent convergence of higher sustained energy prices and demand for carbon footprint reduction has the case for widespread adoption of energy efficiency measures become so compelling. Moreover, today's technology is better, more reliable and ready to be massively deployed in a new trading market based on energy efficiency portfolio standards and white certificates (a/k/a white tags, negawatts, energy saving certificates).

UtilliPoint Issue Alert

It's the end of another year, an appropriate time for a forward look at energy and environmental issues. Many ideas are buzzing around Washington D.C. policy circles
now. What policies will be implemented, when will they be implemented and how will they be implemented? These are important questions.
